Frequently Asked Questions
Do you bill insurance, Medicare or Medicaid?
We do not directly bill insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. We can provide a Superbill upon request.
What can I expect during my initial acupuncture appointment?
We will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and may examine your tongue and pulse. We will explain the treatment plan and answer questions before inserting needles. The actual needle insertion usually takes 15-20 minutes, followed by a rest period of 20-30 minutes with needles in place (time may vary depending on patient arrival time, length of intake, and additional modalities used like cupping and gua sha).
What should I do after treatment?
Rest and stay hydrated after your session. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and extreme temperatures for a few hours. Some people feel energized while others feel relaxed - both responses are normal. Pay attention to any changes in your condition for 24-72 hours after treatment and share your findings with your acupuncturist. Schedule your next appointment as recommended to maintain treatment momentum.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people experience minimal discomfort. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin (about the width of a hair, much thinner than what is used for shots and bloodwork) and designed for comfort. You may feel a slight pinch during insertion, followed by sensations like tingling, warmth, or a dull ache. Many patients find the treatment relaxing and even fall asleep during sessions.
What if I’m afraid of needles?
Communicate your concerns with your acupuncturist. Many needle-phobic patients are surprised by how different acupuncture feels compared to medical injections. Practitioners can start with fewer needles, use the thinnest needles possible, or incorporate other techniques like acupressure, moxa, essential oils, gua sha or cupping alongside minimal needle work.
How many treatments will I need for my condition?
Treatment frequency varies by condition and individual response. Acute conditions may improve within 3-6 sessions, while chronic issues often require 8-12 treatments or more. Most practitioners recommend starting with weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks, then reassessing progress. Your acupuncturist will discuss a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs.
